Project STANDUP is about doing simple things, not easy things. Simple is different than easy. We don’t need to make it be so complicated. We can make a big difference by doing small daily disciplines. They add up.

As I sat and thought what I should write about, I started describing a cardio workout that consists of running sprints and stairs. Half way finished, the thoughts came to my head while sitting behind my computer. “It’s great weather outside and I’m stuck in here. How does one get and stay fit working at a desk all day?” We’ll save the sprints for another time, instead let’s take a look at a day at the office with Big Bear. He became fed up with his unhealthy lifestyle and decided to STANDUP. He started with some simple changes in the work place. Let’s check them out.

9am- arrives to work. He should be there at eight, his bosses usually cut him some slack being that he takes the back roads to avoid being pulled over. He’s a bear driving a power wheels Jeep that tops out at 5 mph. Kind of stands out.

He works on the 3 floor. He now take the stairs. No more elevators for him. I think his co-workers appreciate this, especially after days when he had chili the night before:-)

Arrives at his desk and sits down. He makes sure he drinks a lot of water throughout the day. He finds this really helps him stay alert. He also doesn’t feel like snacking on junk as often. He has learned he was actually more thirsty than hungry. He makes it a point to get up at least every hour or so to go and get some more water. He has since found there is less water cooler talk about him from the others. It probably has something to do with chili and him not taking the elevators anymore.

He started packing a healthy sack lunch and enjoys it out on the office deck. He loves getting the fresh air, is saving money and isn’t tempted to over eat like he used to at restaurants.

At about 2pm he starts hitting the dreaded wall. He finds that by standing at his desk rather than sitting down he is able to focus more. His back and everything else feels better, as he is able to stretch out. He notices due to his frequent water breaks he has to visit the bathroom more  often. This is OK with him. He knows he is well hydrated and he is able to get up and move around when feeling tired. He walks to the restroom on the other side of his office and sometimes runs if he needs to go  really bad.

Finishes the work day at 5pm, takes the stairs back down and walks out to his car. It was a good day. He is excited to use his new found energy to go and spend time with his cubs and teach them to be active.

Will Big Bear get ripped from this daily routine? Probably not, I mean he is a giant stuffed with fluff bear. What about you, will you lose all your fat by doing this? Again, doubtful, at least not from this alone. What it does do though, is change your perspective. The more you are thinking about being active and finding ways to do so, the more active you become. Will this have a huge impact? You bet it will!________________________________________________________________________
